Jul. 28th, 2013 @ 12:23 am Spuffy recs
Yes - she of the Spangel is interested in some recs:

Spuffy post NFA - not schmoopy or lovelorn (both have moved on - changed - even if not romantically), any rating, dark or light. C'mon Spuffy friends! Such stories must exist!

I wish. Good Spuffy is a rare find. Don't have any - the lack of good Spuffy is what made me turn towards Spander and Spangel where there is plenty of well written good stories with plots and emotions and where the characters have matured...

Most Spuffy writers tend to think that Spike is perfect (he sort of is - but you know what I mean) and so is Buffy and she declares her love to him like that! And Xander is loathsome and Angel is stupid and it is. Just. So. Dull.

They also tend to make Spike a crying sex-on-stick sissy...

Really fed up with it.

Sorry. Rant over...

Here is a rec. I guess "Distress Signals" by Peaceheather is better than most. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7619900/1/Distress-Signals It is not what you're looking for... Not what I'm looking for either...

If you haven't found any Spuffy that isn't any of those things, you haven't looked very hard.

ETA: Sorry if I sound cranky, but I am SO tired of seeing comments like this that condemn an entire ship as badly written. Especially when you're comparing it to Spander, which is just as full of schmoop and wildly OOC weepy Spike (and OOC weepy Xander, for that matter) and random bashing of Buffy and Anya. Any large, popular ship is going to have tons of crap written for it. There's good stuff written for both pairings, and the good stuff is what any pairing ought to be judged on.

It's because I am a Spuffy fan myself that I'm so frustrated. I have been since I saw the series for the first time which is only 2 years ago.

I was desperate for some good believeable Spuffy and believe you me, I have looked and looked and looked.

But you're right of course! There are tons of crappy Spander/Spangel stories too. Mine are among them.

But I have found some very good writers who were or are extremely productive in these ships which have made me enjoy both ships eventhough I don't really like either character or ship when I'm watching the series. When I watch the series, I just want Spuffy or perhaps Spillyria, Spred. Well, Spangel too perhaps. But not really. I'm actually pretty standard as in I like man on woman ships.

There are writers within the slash fiction, that just never fail to impress me. Some of them are Shapinglight, Whichclothes, Glassdarklyuk. And Shylahmask who is probably Spuffy but it's all about angst, hurt in her excellent fics and a Spike that's get to be with anybody but the ones he wants to be with.

Yes, I realise I have kinky preferences. I like dark fics filed with angst or bondage or slavery or abuse. They need to be well written. I don't want abuse just for the abuse. I love a good plot and love and HEA. I can't read human AUs. And I need the fics to fit into canon as much as possible. Thus I mostly prefer fics post series.

In the Spuffy "realm", I have found Knifeedge... She is a wonderful storyteller. And Grfndor_godess is a new one that I just found and which I forgot to mention...

I don't mean to condemn the Spuffy fics but maybe most of the writers are simply not as kinky weird as I am. Maybe that's why I haven't been able to find too many Spuffy stories that I actually enjoyed all the way through to the very end...

I can't argue with many of your choices for stand-out writers. shapinglight and glassdarklyuk are the same person, who also writes fantastic Spuffy, IMO, among other, less common pairings. You might also want to give Anaross a try, although her stuff is more angsty than kinky, so it's for you to decide, obviously.

I"ve got to concur with Barb, though. There is a ton of good Spuffy stuff out there, for every taste. I will say that you're likely to find a larger percentage of the less good at SpuffyRealm, which doesn't have a "gatekeeper". Try Just Rewards or All About Spike for better proportions of very good to excellent fic.

Alright. I will check out Anaross.

I knew about Shapinglight and Glassdarklyuk being the same writer but I guess she prefers to keep them separated for some reason.

I will try Just Rewards and All About Spike again. I think I have but there are so many fics. Don't know where to begin...

You're right. There's got to be several good fics out there. However, some older award winning Spuffy fics (and other ships) seem to have been removed/deleted. And other writers have friendlocked their stories years ago. Are there any other apart from Anaross?

Oh my dear! There are so very, very many. I've been pleased to see some resurfacing to put older things on AO3. Hallelujah. I've put a bunch of links in a comment to our hostess, along with some pointers for making the best use of sites. Another option is to stroll through awards sites for fic. It's not foolproof, but it can often cut down on the not-so-good. Just Rewards is good because it's pretty much ALL award-winning fic, or at least by authors who have won multiple awards. (shapinglight is DeborahMM over there.) Happy hunting.

I'll definitely be checking out Just Rewards! Can't believe I didn't think of that site!

Singed - I know what you are talking about - I think it happens in every pairing. There's always stuff I can't stand. My tastes seem to change according to mood - and there is a certain amount of ricochet. I love dark and painful, and then I want Schmoop...just moving all around the fandom. I adore Spangel but it can be impossible to find the exact right Spangel.

Sorta like the 3 bears - this Spangel is too schmoopy, this Spangel is too grim....and this Spangel is asleep in my bed..

That's understandable. However, check with your supplier and ask if there is some kind of problem or what?

As I said, my husband is an IT-consultant and we always have max security as far as I know... In fact, I think I will go ask elsewhere in the fandom if other fans have had similar messages from allaboutspike...

It's me again. Just asked some more Spike fans and they have not had any problems either.

One is working at a public library with heavy virus security and another one is working at a company with industrial strength virus scanners. Everything strongly indicates that your system is giving you a wrong message. :) One suggested that you adjust the settings on your virus software to allow that site to pass.

Oh! For older kink writers on AO3, look up Laure Alexander/ladyoneill. She was writing back in S2, before much of Spike's background came out, so her characterizations may seem a bit peculiar by today's standards. But kink-wise, she may be just what you're looking for. She does Spuffy, Spillow, Spru, Spangel... back in those days, writers weren't segregated by ship nearly so much.

Shapinglight writes awesome Spuffy, too - some of it fairly dark in the sense you're looking for. If you haven't tried it, you're in for a treat. hello_spikey also writes a bunch of noncon/dubcon which is mostly slash, but she does write Spuffy as well, so you might check her out. Let's see - she's not writing any longer, but you might also try clawofcat .

I suspect that the lack of hardcore kink in Spuffy is related to the fact that in light of Seeing Red, it may cut too close to the bone. It's harder to get into rape fantasy when there's an actual attempted rape always looming in the background. :/ As I recall, there was a lot more Spuffy kink written in S5 and early S6, but once Seeing Red aired, it was suddenly all tender gentle Sara McLaughlin sex.

In any case, I wouldn't suggest looking on ff.net - as others have said, there's better Spuffy to be found at smaller archives. The only really good Spuffy writer I can think of who posts primarily to ff.net is The Foxinator.

I think I'm a little confused about what you're looking for. What are you classifying as schmoopy or lovelorn? Very few people who don't ship them and want them to get together are going to be writing post-NFA Spuffy to begin with, so by definition there's almost always going to be a major focus on the fact that they still love each other.

If you're looking for totally non-romantic Spuffy, you might try evil_little_dog ; she wrote post-NFA Spuffy is marketed as Spuffy but is actually pretty anti-Spuffy (she's a Bangel). But it is well-written. If you don't mind some romance, shapinglight has written some excellent post-NFA Spuffy.

It's more a mood thing. There are times when I need to curl up with some serious schmoop! And times when I need to get lost in something totally heart-pounding scary. And times when only h/c will do the job. Mostly now it's just that I want a long story - and long stories can't be too schmoopy for me. Lovelorn is great as long as it's not too easy - and both have changed, because (again) want long story and that conflict needs more playing out.

Make sense?

I'd definitely recommend Shapinglight's "Vampire Winter" or "Heroes in Hell" then. (The former's even got bonus Spangel in it!) quinara is also fantastic for really unsentimental Spuffy, and a lot of her stuff is post-show.

Most of the epic Spuffy stories aren't set post-NFA; they tend to go AU from earlier seasons. Many of the long post-NFA ones I can think of off the top of my head are unfinished WIPs, because a lot of people got discouraged with the comics. But here are some links collections for recent long, plotty ones from various seasons.

Well! *rubs hands together and pushes up sleeves*

First, have you read anaross 's post NFA-Spuffy? There are several, and they don't always end up together at the end. While the relationship is acknowledged and important, it isn't, IDK, imperative? Check out her stuff at Just Rewards. A few that get a lot of attention are: My Life Closed Twice, Unspoken, Long Days Journey. I also recommend Ransomed, Healed, Restored, Forgiven (and, well, everything she's ever written.) Some of these might actually be considered alt-AtS S5. You decide.

celesteavonne is putting her stuff up on AO3, and post-NFA epic Wishes is complete there, while sequel "Regrets" is still in process.

I'm partial to herself_nyc 's Distance, which begins with a feral post-NFA Spike. You might also like her "Spike's Girl" at the same site. Another interesting one by her is Disenchantment.

Here's some I've recced before: http://buffyversetop5.livejournal.com/202865.html, though a couple of the links are broken, alas. I'd also like to add another of msclawdia 's stunning post-NFA works: Reflections. Also, check out Marking Time by annapurna_2 , who finished it in just 6 years! She's my hero and my inspiration.

I could go on and on (and on), but as I mentioned elsewhere on this thread, to find the good stuff, you have a better chance at sites like Just Rewards, All About Spike, and the Bloodshedverse, which have gatekeepers and search filters that can help you narrow things down by pairing, by season, etc. (Bloodshedverse is all Spuffy, but not always happy Spuffy.) Let me know when you want more!

You can keep going if you want - never too many recs. Besides, I always figure if one person asks than more than one person wants to know. I was major Spuffy just after watching the series the first time, and maybe the second time....MAJOR! Like protect Spike from anyone who does not understand the glory of him. Then I started Spangel, with a minor in Spiles and Spesley. But now I am watching episodes before Snark Squad snarks them, so I wanna get back to my roots...

Don't tempt me!

I realized when looking over my recs that I have a penchant for fic wherein Buffy and/or Spike have romances with other people before or after coming together again. This is unacceptable to many Spuffy readers. I'm sure it's unacceptable to many shippers of all stripes to have their chosen two involved with anyone else. I know slaymesoftly got a lot of grief from some Spanders when she wrote a Spander story wherein Spike started out still emotionally/sexually involved with S6 Buffy, even though it was definitely a Spander story. Personally, I'm more upset by stories wherein they end up alone. I don't like Spike as a monk (that's Angels gig), nor Buffy as a nun. YMMV.

Here's one I just read the other day: Crossing into unchipped country by Dutchbuffy2305. That's another old writer that does great work.
